Structural and Functional Glycobiology

The recognition of carbohydrates by proteins is a biological phenomenon of fundamental importance. It is critical to numerous key processes, including the movement and interactions of cells and proteins in animals, interactions between hosts and disease-causing organisms, and the recycling of plant carbohydrates. An understanding of how carbohydrates are recognized by proteins is central to designing programs aimed at manipulating these processes for our benefit. The foundation of research in the Boraston Laboratory at the University of Victoria is to reveal the molecular details that drive the recognition of carbohydrates by catalytic and non-catalytic proteins in biologically relevant processes.
